DIRECTIONS

The drive from the airport to Samokov and on to Beli Iskar is very straightforward. If you are fortunate enough to have a daytime flight you will be rewarded with some stunning views of the Rila Mountains and Lake Iskar.

Arrivals at Terminal One

After collecting your hire car, exit the car park by following the one way system around the car park perimeter. Take a right, at a sign, signposted “Centrum”. Head straight on and then go straight on at the traffic lights onto the main road.

Arrivals at Terminal Two

Leave the terminal building and follow the road straight on and bear right at the T-junction. At the next traffic lights, turn left onto the main road.

Sofia to Samokov

After approximately 2km, look out for a flyover bridge. Here you need to take a right, it should be signposted Plovdiv (пловдив). This road immediately leads into a tight 180 degree right turn, right in front of a Shell petrol station. Keep your wits about you as you merge onto the main carriageway as the slip road is very short!

Keep driving for about 10 minutes, looking out for a large Metro supermarket on the right. Take a right turning here – signposted for Borovets/Samokov (боровец/самоков).

You are now on the road that goes all the way to Samokov. Don’t be perturbed by the abundance of car parks, showrooms and garage forecourts on the first stage of this road – you are in “car city” and we can assure you that you are on the right road.

Just stay on this road for approx 50 minutes, after which you should be entering the outskirts of Samokov.

When you reach the next main crossroads (there’s a petrol station on the right hand side) you have two options:

Option a) To continue to Beli Iskar, at the crossroads (with the petrol station to your right), take the right turning. Get ready though as you will need to take the next left (after about 100m), signposted by a blue sign marked Beli Iskar (бели искър).

Option b) Alternatively, why not stop off at the Billa supermarket in Samokov and stock up on some well needed groceries? See below for directions to the Billa supermarket.

Directions to the Billa Supermarket (Samokov)

At the crossroads, turn left and head over the bridge spanning the River Iskar. Once on the other side, turn right immediately. The Billa supermarket is on the right, just before the new sports hall (large silver building).

Once stocked up, return to the other side of the river (turn left out of the supermarket car park, and then next left to cross the river).

Go straight on at the next crossroads, but after approx. 100m take the next left, signposted by a blue sign marked Beli Iskar (бели искър).

The road to Beli Iskar

This next road takes you all the way to Beli Iskar. Just before you enter the village, you will see that the road bears right towards the villages of Madzhare (Маджаре) and Goverdartsi (говердарци). Don’t follow this road to the right, bear left into Beli Iskar (бели искър).

Welcome to Beli Iskar

Once in the village, you should see the magnificent rock formation, known as Eagles Rock, rising before you in the distance. Follow the road around to the left, over the bridge (the River Iskar again!) and at the fork in the road, just before the old school building, bear to the left. This takes you up the hill to the Eagles Rock Complex.

Return Journey

Your return journey is simply a matter of going back the way you came until you reach the outskirts of Sofia. At this point it is good idea to refuel your hire vehicle at one of the many petrol stations dotting the carriageways. You will notice on the map of Sofia, a slightly different return section marked in red. This brings you onto the mаin Sofia /Plovdiv (софия/пловдив) road in a more direct route. This shortcut is easily spotted by keeping an eye out for a group of 4 tall, factory chimneys in the distance. Head straight for the chimneys and at the junction with the main dual carriageway, turn left. Once safely on the highway, you will see the signposts for Sofia airport, which is a right turn. Immediately after turning right and merging onto the new road, you need to move across to the left hand side of the road in order to keep going straight ahead to the terminal building. Both the old and new terminals are signposted as you approach.

Tips for a safer journey in Bulgaria

Speed limits:

Area Limit(Km/h)
Built up areas 50
Rural (out of town) 90
Main road/dual carriageway 130

The Bulgarian traffic police are very strict and do not tolerate speeding. They also have very strict drink driving laws that can result in heavy fines and a years driving ban for offenders. Please be sensible, stick to the speed limits and absolutely no drink driving.
